Information for Beginners

About Astanga

Astanga Vinyasa is one of the most dynamic forms of practice and to beginners it is often challenging. However the benefits of a regular practice become apparent after a short time and, with a little patience, the breathing technique becomes more natural, allowing the body to move through the sequence with ease. Since all the postures can be modified to an individual's capability, Astanga Vinyasa yoga is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with experience of other styles of yoga.

What to wear

It is important to wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing that will allow stretching. Yoga is always practiced in bare feet. Dangly jewellery and watches should be removed before beginning your practice.

What to bring

Yoga mats are provided but it is more hygienic to use your own. You can purchase a high quality yoga mat at any of the classes for £16. The body heat generated during Astanga Vinyasa yoga can induce sweating, so you may wish to bring along a small towel.

Eating and Drinking

Water should not be drunk during a yoga class as it cools down the internal heat that we aim to generate and can also cause discomfort when twisting and folding forward. It is therefore important to be properly hydrated before class and to drink plenty of water afterwards. At least two hours should be allowed between eating and starting your yoga practice; more time if you have eaten a big meal.
